There are scary books, and then there is The Rats by James Herbert

What’s a book or movie that genuinely scared you?

I can honestly say it is the most terrifying book I have ever read. And the funny thing is, I didn’t even finish reading it myself.

I started reading it with the usual curiosity you have when you pick up a horror novel. You know it’s fiction, you know it’s meant to frighten you, and you tell yourself that it’s only a story. But James Herbert had a way of making the unimaginable feel horribly possible.

The rats weren’t just something lurking in the shadows of a horror story. They became something I could almost picture moving around in the corners of my own imagination. Every description seemed to make them more real, more threatening and altogether more unpleasant.

Eventually, I reached a point where my imagination had simply had enough.

I couldn’t bring myself to finish the book. So, in a rather bizarre turn of events, I asked my sister to read me the ending instead.

Think about that for a moment. I was so frightened of a book that I needed someone else to tell me how it ended!

Looking back, I find that quite funny. But at the time, there was nothing funny about it. I was genuinely terrified.

Perhaps that’s the real magic of a good horror writer. They don’t need to put anything in front of you. They give your imagination just enough information, and your mind does the rest. Sometimes rather too enthusiastically!

James Herbert managed to turn an ordinary creature into something deeply unsettling. Even now, the memory of that book has stayed with me.

I’ve watched frightening films, encountered all sorts of horror stories, but The Rats holds a special place in my personal hall of terror.

And here’s my question: Have you ever read a book or watched a film that frightened you so much you couldn’t finish it?

Or am I the only person who has ever recruited a family member to finish a horror story on my behalf?

😳😂
